It has been decided that worshippers in the month of Ramadan who intend to perform Itikaf will only be allowed to do so, on the roof of the Prophets’ (Peace Be Upon Him) Mosque in Madinah.

This new development was approved by Prince Faisal Bin Salman, emir of Madinah and chairman of the Haj Committee in Madinah. This will then mean that, the ground floor of the mosque will be allocated for prayer only.

Ramadan in 2018 is due to commence mid-May and approximately 10,000 individuals can take advantage of these new Itikaf arrangements, should they wish to.

These new improvements to the Itikaf arrangements have been put in place to stop previous activities such as taking personal belongings inside the mosque and placing them in inappropriate places, causing inconvenience to worshipers by spreading sheets on the area designated for prayer and sleeping there, and non-compliance with guidelines regarding Itikaf.

For those wishing to partake in Itikaf in at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, an online registration facility has been launched. The basement of the King Fahd expansion area of the mosque is earmarked for Itikaf.
